My disposal hums but does not spin. Is it dead?
Usually not. A hum means the motor has power but something is physically jamming the plate, often a bone, a bottle cap, or a piece of cutlery.
Leave it off until it is cleared. Running it while jammed is what actually burns out the motor.
There is water under my sink. Is it the disposal?
It might be. Disposals leak from three places: the sink flange on top, the dishwasher inlet on the side, and the body seal at the bottom.
A leak from the bottom of the unit means the internal seal has gone and the disposal needs replacing.
What should never go down a disposal?
Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice, and anything fibrous like celery or onion skins.
Grease is the worst of them. It goes down warm and solidifies further along the line, which is how a disposal problem becomes a drain problem.
How long should a disposal last?
About eight to fifteen years depending on how hard it has been worked.
Once a unit starts leaking from the body, replacing it costs less than repeated repairs.
